Pant!

Unconditional loves isn't just for humans

Role: Product Designer

Years: 2016, 2021

Introduction

In the evolving landscape of my career back in 2016, I found myself in the midst of a transformative shift from a full-time back-end developer to the realm of front-end design. Eager to enhance my portfolio, which was previously confined to internal design work at The Children's Place, I embarked on a quest for engaging exercises that would both bolster my creative repertoire and ignite inspiration.

A serendipitous encounter with a casual remark on Twitter became the catalyst for an exhilarating design endeavor. The comment, suggesting a "Tinder for dogs" concept, resonated with me, especially during a time when Tinder and Bumble were revolutionizing the dating scene. Intrigued by the notion, I seized upon the idea and commenced outlining the project's scope.

Envisioning a platform that captures the sheer joy and excitement of dogs, I set out to create a mobile app that transcended the conventional. With each enthusiastic pant and wag of the tail, the concept blossomed into a cascade of imaginative ideas. This marked the inception of a journey filled with creativity, innovation, and the pursuit of crafting a delightful and unique experience for canine companions.

the 2016 Initial Design

In 2016, my fervent enthusiasm for Google's Material Design was unmistakable, as I wholeheartedly embraced this innovative design library. Eager to infuse its principles into every facet of my work, I dedicated myself to incorporating Material Design into each design project. During this period, the creation of screens involved a seamless integration of Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop—my tools of choice outside the coding realm at that time. This commitment not only reflected my admiration for cutting-edge design concepts but also underscored my dedication to crafting visually appealing and user-friendly interfaces.

The 2021 Redesign

In 2021, as I explored new career opportunities, a critical self-reflection during interviews prompted me to reassess my portfolio. I recognized the need to infuse more personality into it, especially since my existing body of work predominantly featured B2B internal and SaaS products. The portfolio lacked a clear demonstration of my proficiency in product discovery and creative direction, aspects vital to showcasing the breadth of my design capabilities.

This realization sparked the idea to breathe new life into Pant, reimagining it with a contemporary touch and a revamped user journey. The goal was to bring forth a more comprehensive and expressive representation of my design skills. To execute this project, I turned to Sketch, a design tool I was proficient in at the time, leveraging its capabilities to refine the user experience and aesthetic appeal of Pant for the evolving design landscape in 2021.

Conclusion

Undoubtedly, this exercise stands out as one of the most enjoyable experiences in my journey as a designer. The process allowed me to relish the art of copywriting and authentically embed my personality into the design, creating a project that felt uniquely mine. As I reflect on this endeavor, I can't help but entertain the thought of revisiting Pant in 2026, perhaps breathing new life into it once again and turning it into a tradition. The potential for ongoing evolution and refinement presents an exciting prospect, leaving the door open for future creative ventures and explorations.
